“What’s the difference between a 1.5mm and a 3.9mm panel — and does it actually matter for my event?”
The short answer: yes. It matters a lot.
The slightly longer answer: it matters in ways that have nothing to do with one panel being better than another. It’s about matching the right tool to the right job. Get it right and your LED environment looks exactly as intended. Get it wrong and you’ve either overspent on resolution nobody in the room can see — or you’ve put a panel in a space where it noticeably undersells your content.

Start Here: What Is Pixel Pitch?
Pixel pitch is the distance in millimeters between the center of one LED cluster and the center of the next.
That’s it. One number. But it drives nearly every other aspect of how an LED panel performs for a given application.
- Smaller number = smaller gap between pixels = more pixels per square meter = sharper image at close range.
- Larger number = bigger gap = fewer pixels per square meter = suited to viewing from a distance.
A 1.5mm panel packs roughly 444,000 pixels into a single square meter. A 3.9mm panel contains about 65,000 pixels in the same space. Both can look flawless — in the right environment. Both will disappoint you — in the wrong one.
The single most important variable in choosing between them is viewing distance: how far away will your audience be standing when they look at this screen?
The Viewing Distance Rule (And Why It Matters More Than Resolution)
There’s a practical rule of thumb that production teams use:
Your minimum comfortable viewing distance (in feet) is roughly 3 times the pixel pitch (in mm).
So a 1.5mm panel looks great from about 4–5 feet away. A 3.9mm panel starts looking sharp at around 12 feet. A 4.8mm panel from roughly 15 feet.
Push a 3.9mm panel into a conference room where attendees are seated 8 feet from the screen and they may start to notice individual pixels — especially on text, fine lines, and speaker support graphics. It won’t be dramatic, but it’ll be there, and on camera it will definitely be visible.
Conversely, put a 1.5mm fine pitch panel at the back of a 600-person general session where the nearest audience member is 30 feet away, and you’ve spent significantly more on resolution than anyone in that room will ever perceive.
This is the core logic. Everything else is application.
The Camera Rule: Why Pixel Pitch Matters Even More on Screen
There’s a second variable that changes everything — and most event planners don’t hear about it until after they’ve made the wrong call.
If your event will be recorded, broadcast, live-streamed, or captured for IMAG (Image Magnification) — the camera sees things the human eye forgives.
When a camera lens focuses on an LED wall, the physics of how it captures a rasterized display surface are fundamentally different from how your eye perceives the same wall from the same distance. Cameras — especially broadcast cameras shooting at high frame rates — pick up pixel structure, moiré patterns, and refresh artifacts that are completely invisible to a live audience member standing in the same room.
The practical implication is this: for any application involving cameras, you need a finer pitch panel than viewing distance alone would suggest.
For IMAG environments — where a camera feeds a presenter or performer’s image back to screens in real time — or for broadcast, recording, and live streaming applications, 2.38mm or better is the threshold. At 2.5mm and above, the panel structure starts to become visible in camera output, particularly in backgrounds behind presenters, where the regular pixel grid can create interference patterns with the camera sensor.
This matters in more situations than most planners initially expect:
- Conference keynotes with IMAG — cameras capturing the stage with the LED wall behind the presenter
- Awards ceremonies with broadcast or livestream — the back wall is in frame for every winner’s moment
- Hybrid events — where a significant portion of the audience is watching remotely via stream
- Recording for post-production — session recordings, highlight reels, CEO message videos
- Press coverage — any event where photographers or video crews will be present
If cameras will be in the room, the camera is part of your audience. Spec accordingly.
The economic case for going finer when cameras are involved:
Fine pitch panels cost more per square meter. But consider the math: if your event is being streamed to 10,000 remote viewers, or if the keynote recording is going to live on your website for the next three years, the cost of a 2.38mm wall versus a 3.9mm wall is a fraction of the value of that content looking sharp and professional versus pixelated.
Broadcast forgiveness is one of the strongest arguments for choosing the finest pitch you can accommodate in your budget — even when live viewing distance doesn’t technically require it.
